God Remembers

Then God remembered Noah, and every living thing, and all the animals that were with him in the ark. And God made a wind to pass over the earth, and the waters subsided. (Gen. 8:1)

And it came to pass, when God destroyed the cities of the plain, that God remembered Abraham, and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow, when He overthrew the cities in which Lot had dwelt. (Gen. 19:29)

More and more I am learning the value of approaching God’s Word as one would approach a feast… Slowly savouring each truth, rolling it around on my tongue and meditating on it in my heart. Because the richest of tastes seem to come alive when you go…slow.

I want to share with you the encouragement two words brought to my heart today. It would have been easy to skim over the phrase – ‘God remembered’, but God invited me to taste the beautiful truth of His character wrapped up in these two words.

Both Noah and Abraham were righteous men of God and had been obedient to Him – even when they couldn’t see the bigger picture at times. They were also friends of God and He had shared with them what He was planning to do in the earth. But God showed His mercy to both these friends of His. In Noah’s case, God remembered the covenant promise He had made to Noah to save him and his household from the Great Flood. And even though God destroyed Sodom because of the wickedness of its inhabitants, God showed kindness to Abraham in that He provided an escape from the destruction for his nephew, Lot, and his family. God remembered the promises He had made to them both and showed them His kindness and faithfulness.

However, the word ‘remember’ doesn’t just refer to a fleeting impression of remembrance, but their names were indelibly imprinted and marked in His mind. They were in His thoughts. He saw and He heard. This was an INTIMATE REMEMBRANCE which engaged God’s heart and emotions. He remembered and He was moved.

Oh, the refreshing as you allow those two words to wash over your soul… God remembers.

He remembers every promise He has ever made to You. He remembers every prayer you have prayed – no matter how weak or small it may have felt. He remembers every thought He had about you as He created you. He remembers that we are dust. He remembers every tear you have cried and He remembers every time you have looked up to Him and whispered, ‘I love You’. He remembers, because you matter to His heart.

May our hearts take courage today as we remember that the Faithful One is a Father, who REMEMBERS.
